エミリーのイヤリングを借りていたテルマですが、帰ってきて言いにくいことが･･････。
(Thelma borrows Emily’s earrings, but when she returns home, she finds something difficult to say…)

言いにくいんだけど、 イヤリングなくしちゃった。

エミリーのイヤリングを借りていたテルマでしたが、 なくしたことに気づきます。
(Thelma borrows Emily’s earrings, but then realizes she has lost them.)
エミリーに言おうとしますが、とても言いにくいので、前置き的に「どう言ったらいいか•••••• ごめんなさい」
(I try to say something to Emily, but it’s really hard to say, so I preface it by saying, “I don’t know how to say… I’m sorry.”)

というキモチで I don’t know how to tell you this … と言っています。 I don’t know how to… (･･･のしかたがわからない) は how to … の最も高頻度のフレーズです。
