♪ Topic 14: What should you do if you disagree with your friend? Day 4.
All right, then. Let’s start off with a brief chat with Nero. Nero, before, you told us that you participated in dance classes.
That’s correct. I went to a performing arts high school in Australia.
Oh, wow.
Then after, I filmed videos of myself dancing and sent them to dance schools all over the world.
Wow.
After, I was accepted into a school in Switzerland. It was a secret, though. My parents didn’t know.
Wow!
You didn’t tell them you made the videos?
No. And I remember when the first acceptance letter arrived in the post, my mother was very angry.
Oh, no.
But she finally became happy. Right?
Yeah. So, I got five acceptance letters. So, then I think she realized, “Uh, this is serious.”
Yes.
Yes. You must have been a very good dancer.
Mm… I was okay.
So, why did you want to become a dancer?
Because dancing was the closest thing to flying. I always wanted to fly as a child. And then I discovered dance. And when you jump and move across the space, it almost feels like flying. Don’t you think?
Wow! I’ve never thought of it that way, but what a wonderful idea!
Yes. I can’t do that, so I don’t know.
Everyone can dance.
How old (were you when) you started to dance?
How old was I when I started dancing?
Yes.
I was eight years old.
Mmm. Eight?
I started a little late. Most people start when they’re four or five years old.
Wow!
What kind of dance did you do?
I started with jazz, but my technique was not very good.
So, I started after that with ballet.
Ballet.
Ooh, ballet.
Yeah. And then after, my specialization was contemporary dance.
How would you describe contemporary dance?
That’s a difficult question. I would describe contemporary dance as a mix between jazz and ballet with everyday movements mixed in.
Oh.
So, for example, doing a ballet jump and then walking normally and trying to express your emotions.
So, what did you like most about being a dancer?
I loved traveling and performing on stages all over the world.
Wow. Where did you perform?
As a student, I performed in Italy and Austria, and the theaters were gorgeous – lots of paintings on the ceilings and gold on the seats.
Wow!
Gold paint, very beautiful.
Wow!
And as a professional, I performed in a lot of smaller spaces. So, sometimes we performed in old swimming pools that were transformed into performance spaces, art galleries, etc.
How interesting! What were some of the challenges of being a dancer?
There were not too many because it was my passion what I wanted to do. I would have to say, though, that the pain in my body was very hard. That’s actually why
I stopped dancing.
