-New Words, New PhrasesNotes
The first one is: allergic. Riku, do you know the word “allergy”?
Allergy?
Yeah. In the springtime, for example, when plants and trees grow, maybe… maybe you sneeze a lot.
Arerugi?
Yes.
Ah, yes, yes. “To be allergic” means “to have an allergy.”
Right. In the dialogue, Saki says, “I’m allergic to cats.”
Riku, are you allergic to anything?
Yes. I’m cats allergic.
Oh!
Oh, you are allergic to cats, like Saki.
Now, the next new word is: trouble.
When you hear the word “trouble,” your first idea might be that something bad happened, or someone has a serious problem.
But another meaning of “trouble” is the work or effort needed to take care of something.
Right. In the dialogue, Saki says she takes her dog for a walk every morning. And Ken replies, “That’s a lot of trouble, isn’t it?”
Ken means, “It’s not easy to take the dog for a walk every day, is it?”
Yeah. If something is a lot of trouble, it means it’s not easy. It takes work.
Now, our last phrase today is: chill.
Here, “to chill” means “to relax” or “to spend time relaxing.”
Yeah. In the dialogue, Ken says, “I like to chill at home.” He means he enjoys relaxing at home.
Yes. Riku, where is your favorite place to chill?
My home.
Your home, too.
Okay. Let’s listen to the dialogue one more time.
