一番上に最も重要で大きな話が来て、次第に小さい話に移っていくので、話の重要性という観点から図にしてみると逆三角形のようになります。

そして、文章の最後に「必ずしも結論がない」ことも、逆ピラミッド構造の特徴です。記事の途中で読むのを止めても違和感がない構成で書かれているのです。私自身も英字新聞の記者になったときに、「記事は一番上に大事なことを書け。そして下から切れるように書け」と教わりました。

Mmm. That’s definitely useful advice and it applies to writing and presentations alike. The inverted pyramid as it’s called, reduces the burden on the audience.

皆さんが英文を書くときやプレゼンをするときには、ぜひ逆ピラミッド（inverted pyramid）をイメージして、まず結論から言ってみましょう。いったん慣れれば、文章を作りやすく、相手にとっても分かりやすいものになります。
逆に、結論をさっさと言わないと、「論旨がはっきりしない文章である」「何かをもったいぶって隠している」という印象を持たれてしまうこともあります。
(On the other hand, if you don’t state your conclusion quickly, you may get the impression that your writing doesn’t make the point clear or that you’re trying to hide something.)
“SAKE”と呼ばれる前には、どう呼ばれていたのでしょうか？
Tom:
Mmm. I think people probably call it Japanese rice wine.
米を発酵させたものですから。
Right. Right. And I think people are becoming more familiar with Japanese these days. So I think more people are calling it “SAKE”. But there are a lot of people who call it [saki].
