WORLD LEADERS PLEDGE TO HASTEN ACTION ON SDGs
2023年9月19日のニュース

World leaders at the UN have adopted a declaration promising to step up measures to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
The leaders attended a high-level forum on the SDGs on Monday alongside the General Assembly meeting. The goals were adopted in 2015 with support from all UN members, with a promise to leave no one behind.
The meeting was held to mark the halfway point to the deadline. But Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said efforts to achieve only 15 percent of the targets are on track.

“Many are going in reverse. Instead of leaving no one behind, we risk leaving the SDGs behind.”

Guterres highlighted the need for action in six critical areas. They include eliminating starvation, transitioning to renewable energy, and ensuring access to education.

NASA CAPSULE CARRYING ASTEROID SAMPLES RETURNS TO EARTH
2023年9月25日のニュース
A NASA space capsule carrying soil samples from an asteroid some 300 million kilometers away has successfully returned to Earth.
NASA’s space probe OSIRIS-REx released the sample capsule into Earth’s atmosphere. The disc-shaped container was recovered on Sunday from the desert floor in the U.S. state of Utah.
The spacecraft began its journey from Earth in 2016 and reached the asteroid Bennu two years later. It used a robotic arm to collect an estimated 250 grams of rock and dust specimens from the asteroid’s surface.
Scientists involved in the mission could hardly contain their excitement.

“We think we’ve got a lot of sample in that science canister, and we can’t wait to crack into it. For me, the real science is just beginning.”

This marks only the third time such samples have been brought back to Earth, following Japan’s Hayabusa and Hayabusa-2 missions.

INDIVIDUAL FINANCIAL ASSETS REACH RECORD HIGH IN JAPAN
2023年9月21日のニュース

Financial assets held by individuals in Japan have risen to a record high against the backdrop of strong stock markets.
The Bank of Japan conducts a quarterly survey of the amount of people’s cash savings, securities, and other assets.
The latest data show the total was more than 2,100 trillion yen, or about 14 trillion dollars, as of the end of June. That’s an increase of 4.6 percent in yen terms compared to a year earlier. Currency and deposits accounted for 52 percent of total assets.
The government is planning to expand a tax exemption program called NISA in January. It’s designed to encourage individuals to invest in stock markets instead of holding their assets as deposits and help the country’s economy grow.

ZELENSKYY, LAVROV TRADE BARBS AT UN
2023年9月21日のニュース

Ukraine and Russia have traded barbs at a special session of the UN Security Council called to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
The meeting took place at UN headquarters in New York on Wednesday alongside the General Assembly.

“With its aggression, the terrorist state is willing to undermine all the dams of international norms meant to protect the world from wars.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for reform in the use of veto power at the UN and stressed that peace cannot be restored while an aggressor remains a member of the Security Council.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov reiterated Russia’s claim that Ukraine had created the cause for the invasion. He also justified his country’s position in the Security Council.

“The West turns to statutory norms and principles selectively from case to case, solely in accordance with its selfish geopolitical needs.”

JAPANESE BREWER STARTS U.S.-MADE SAKE SALES
2023年9月25日のニュース

A well-known Japanese sake maker will start shipping from its new brewery in New York State on Monday. Asahi Shuzo is the latest of several brewers of the alcoholic beverage to set up U.S. facilities on growing demand from American customers.
The company is based in Yamaguchi Prefecture, western Japan, and known for its “Dassai” brand. The U.S. brewery is its first outside Japan.
The company’s U.S.-made products will hit local store shelves on Monday. A 720-milliliter bottle will go for just under 35 dollars. The products are brewed from sake rice imported from Japan. But there are plans in the future to use grain from the state of Arkansas.
An industry group says the United States has around 20 sake breweries. A U.S. maker launched a large-scale facility in Arkansas in May.
