We start with the growing international condemnation against Russia for pulling out of a major grain deal. Officials warn this decision is going to hurt some of the world’s most vulnerable people.
The Black Sea Grain Initiative allowed Ukrainians to safely export grain and fertilizer through Black Sea ports amid the ongoing war. The agreement had helped stabilize food costs for millions around the world. It expired on Monday.
The UN Security Council met shortly after Russia’s announcement.

“Ukrainians are Russians’ principal victims. But this war is also harming the poor and the vulnerable across the world, particularly in Africa, in Asia, and in Latin America.”

Moscow says it may come back to the table, but only if Russian grain and fertilizer exports are allowed and some Western sanctions are eased.

Hollywood’s actors’ union has voted to go on their first strike in 43 years, after contract negotiations with studios and streaming services broke down. Actors are joining screenwriters who’ve been on the picket line since May.
The president of the actors’ union announced the decision on Thursday. The organization represents about 160,000 union members, including 65,000 actors.

“The entire business model has been changed by streaming, digital, AI. If we don’t stand tall right now, we are all going to be in trouble. We are all going to be in jeopardy of being replaced by machines.”

Both actors’ and screenwriters’ unions are demanding increases in base pay and residuals in the streaming era. They also want assurances their work will not be replaced by artificial intelligence.

Japan’s Nisshin Foods Holdings is coming up with a substitute for grilled eels made with only plant-based ingredients. These include soy protein and vegetable oil.
The product has three layers to mimic an eel’s white meat, skin, and connecting tissue. It’s grilled over a fire to brown its surface. The firm started selling its eel alternative for 1,500 yen per set, or a little over 10 dollars, on Tuesday.
Eating grilled eels is a long-standing summer tradition in Japan. It’s said to bring relief from the heat and build stamina. But eel prices are surging, as catches have dropped while overseas demand has grown. This prompted Nissin Foods to develop its version.
Analysts expect the global market for plant-based substitutes for meat and seafood to grow. One private think tank estimates, in 2021, over 480 billion yen, or over 3.5 billion dollars’ worth of the food was shipped.

Britain has been formally approved to join the trans-Pacific trade agreement, known as the CPTPP.
The 11 current members gave Britain the green light at their ministerial-level meeting in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sunday.

(Kemi Badenoch / British Business and Trade Secretary)
“This is a modern and ambitious agreement, and our membership of this exciting, growing, and forward-looking bloc is proof that the U.K.’s doors are open for business.”

Britain will be the first country to join the pact following the original members. Its accession widens the pact’s economic sphere to Europe.
After the country completes the ratification process, the pact will formally have 12 members. The combined population of countries in the bloc will be about 580 million, representing a total GDP of around 15 trillion dollars. Britain has been in negotiations to join the trade bloc since 2021, following its departure from the European Union the year before.

Anime fans who flocked to see the latest work of renowned director Miyazaki Hayao did not know what to expect. The film opened in Japan on Friday, shrouded in mystery. Studio Ghibli shared no information about it prior to the release, except for its title and a poster with an image of a bird.
Miyazaki came out of retirement to direct “Kimitachi wa Do Ikiru ka,” or “How Do You Live?” – his first work in a decade. Its production took him about seven years, including writing the movie’s original screenplay.

“The story was profound. I want to think about it again myself.”

(Moviegoer)
“It was good I could watch the movie without seeing any spoilers on the internet.”

Theaters are not selling any booklets about the film. The studio says it wants each audience member to be a blank slate, viewing the film with no preconceptions.
