オランダ The Netherlands

国名はオランダ語で 「低地の国」 という意味の Nederland に由来し、その名のとおり国土の4分の1が海面より低い位置にある。 オランダ名物でもある風車は、干拓で国土を広げていた時代の名残。
(The country’s name comes from the Dutch word Nederland, which means ‘lowland country’, and as the name suggests, one-fourth of the country is below sea level. Windmills, which are also a specialty of Holland, are a remnant of the era when the country was expanding its land by reclamation.)

国内最大の都市アムステルダムにはもう一つのオランダ名物の運河が放射状に広がり、美しい町並みは世界文化遺産に登録されている。 オランダの画家ゴッホやレンブラントにちなんだ美術館も観光スポットの定番。
(Amsterdam, the largest city in the country, has another famous Dutch canal radiating out, and its beautiful townscape is registered as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Museums associated with Dutch painters Van Gogh and Rembrandt are also standard tourist spots.)
