「路面電車」 を英語で言うと? (How do you say “tram” in English?)
乗り物の英語での呼び名は地域でまちまち。 (The name of the vehicle in English varies from region to region.)
「路面電車」 は cable carと呼ぶこともあれば、 streetcar と呼ぶことも。
僕自身の語感としては,どういうわけか後者のイメージが強いです。 それはアメリカ人なら誰もが知っている、 サンフランシスコが舞台のとあるテレビ番組のせいかもしれません。 (For some reason, I have a strong impression of the latter. It may be because of a TV show set in San Francisco that every American knows.)
あるいはニューオーリンズが舞台の有名な戯曲「A Streetcar Named Desire」 の影響かも。 ただ、 一般的に人々は短い言葉を好む傾向があるので、 現在では streetcar よりも短い tram が定番になってきています。
