ヨーロッパの自転車王国オランダ
オランダでは自転車が交通手段としてとても人気。 理由の1つに、北欧の国々のようにエコ意識が高いことがあるでしょう。 また、 オランダは国土全体が平という事情もあります。
(Bicycles are a very popular means of transportation in the Netherlands. One of the reasons may be the high eco-consciousness of the Nordic countries. Another reason is that the whole land of the Netherlands is flat.)

ところで、オランダの国名に関する話題を知っていますか? オランダ政府がHolland という通称を廃止したのです。 Hollandは一部の地域のみを指すため、 オランダ全土の認知度を高める目的でそうしたようです。 日本でも英語の The Netherlands のように「ネザーランド」 と呼ぶことが増えるかもしれません。
僕はこのカタカナを聞くたび、 ピーターパンに登場する 「ネバーランド」 のように聞こえてしまいます
(Every time I hear this katakana, it sounds like “Neverland” from Peter Pan.)

In Japan, we cycle on the left side of the road. But in
Amsterdam, people cycle on the right side. Be careful of the cycling rules, and let’s be safe!
