自国の理解を深めるカギは異文化交流にあり(Cross-cultural exchange is the key to deepening understanding of one’s own country)

日本に住んでから、僕は自国の文化への理解が深まりました。日本に住む以前は「伝統文化」などの分かりやすい異文化に目が行っていたのですが、日本に住んでから、北海道から沖縄までさまざまな家庭で心温まるおもてなしを受けました。 (Since living in Japan, my understanding of my own culture has deepened. Before I lived in Japan, I was more interested in “traditional culture” and other easy-to-understand aspects of other cultures, but after living in Japan, I have received heartwarming hospitality from many different families from Hokkaido to Okinawa. )

そこで分かった日本流のおもてなしの共通点が「Here’s ~ for you. (はい、~をどうぞ)」の精神。
僕が好きそうな食べ物などを事前に一生懸命考えて、準備したうえで出してくれました。つまり、お客さんに尽くして喜ばせるおもてなしが「日本流」。皆さんにはそれが当たり前かもしれません。
(He thought hard in advance about foods that I might like, prepared them, and then served them to me. In other words, the Japanese way of hospitality is to do our best to please our customers. It may be obvious to everyone.)

しかし、アメリカでは来客に選択肢を与える「Help yourself. (ご自由にどうぞ)」のおもてなしが多いと思います。アメリカのレストランで付け合わせの選択をやたらと聞かれた経験はありませんか? たくさんの選択肢を提供して自由に組み合わせてもらうのが「アメリカ流」のおもてなし。 (Have you ever been asked a lot about what to choose as a side dish at an American restaurant?)
今では日本に定着したビュッフェやドリンクバーも Help yourself. の一種ですね。

どちらの文化に合わせる? 国際交流のジレンマ(Which culture do you fit in? The dilemma of international exchange)

おもてなしのスタイルは相手と自分、どちらの国の文化に合わせればよいでしょうか? きっと、答えは両方。すべて相手に合わせるのでもなく、自国のスタイルを押し通すのでもなく、大切なのは折り合いをつけること。
(Which culture should you adapt your hospitality style to, your partner’s or your own? The answer is probably both. The important thing is to find a balance between the two, not to conform to the other’s style or to impose one’s own style.)

用意した物を差し出すとき、 Here’s ~. のあとに for you をつければ「あなたのために準備しましたよ」という気持ちが伝わりますし、Help yourself. と相手に委ねて We have A, B, and C. (AとBとCがあります) と選択肢を与えるのも親切ですね。
そんな文化の違いを理解したうえで意思疎通を図れば、お互いにきずなが生まれることでしょう。
