家族農場(family farm)
実は、僕の母方の親戚はバージニア州で野菜を栽培しウシを飼う family farm で育ちました。 (In fact, my maternal relatives grew up in Virginia on a family farm that grew vegetables and raised cattle.)
しかし、 アメリカ全土でこうした family farm はだんだん減ってきているようです。 とてもさみしいですね。 (However, it seems that such family farms are dwindling all over America. I miss you so much.)
子どもが別の職業に就くこともその理由の1つでしょうが、もう1つには big agriculture と呼ばれる農業や食品の大企業が拡大した影響があるようです。 (One of the reasons for this is that children will take up different occupations, but another reason seems to be the expansion of large agricultural and food companies called big agriculture.)
こうしたビジネスでは広大な土地で大量の作物を育て、 巨大な機械で手入れや収穫などをしています。 (These businesses grow large amounts of crops on vast tracts of land, tending and harvesting them with huge machines.)大量生産によって価格は安くなり、 小規模の family farm は競争することが難しくなるのです。
ちなみに、 アメリカで最も多く栽培されている作物の1つがトウモロコシ。 そのまま食べるだけではなくコーンシロップに加工されて多くの食品に使われ、 また家畜のえさにもなっています。
(By the way, one of the most grown crops in America is corn. Not only is it eaten as it is, it is processed into corn syrup and used in many foods, and it is also used as food for livestock.)
