アメリカのごみ収集システム
日本では「燃えるごみ」「燃えないごみ」「ビン、カン」「ペットボトル」「紙資源」などの細かい分別や呼び方が比較的統一されていますが、 (In Japan, detailed sorting and names such as “burnable garbage”, “non-burnable garbage”, “bottles and cans”, plastic bottles “PET bottles”, and “paper resources” are relatively standardized.)
アメリカでは州や町によって基準がばらばら。(In the United States, each state and town has different standards.)
近年、環境保護のためにプラスチック (plastics)、アルミ (aluminum)、ガラス (glass) の3つはリサイクルするようになりましたが、それまでは車ほどの大きさのあるごみ集積保管庫 (dumpster) に、プラスチック、鉄、マットレス、粗大ごみなど何でも入れていました。(In recent years, plastic, aluminum, and glass have been recycled for environmental protection, but until then, plastics, iron, mattresses, bulky waste, etc. I put anything in it.)
英語で「粗大ごみ」は bulky items と言って、最近では Bulky items are picked up on first Mondays. (粗大ごみは第1月曜日に収集します) のような収集日を説明する文も見かけます。しかしそれもうまくいかず、収集日の1週間前や別の曜日に出してしまう問題が発生し、予約制に切り替えた州や町も増えています。 (An increasing number of states and towns have switched to an appointment system due to the problem of putting out garbage a week before the collection date or on the wrong day of the week.) また、アメリカでは誰かが予約して粗大ごみを出すと、近所の人が便乗して粗大ごみを出して、いつの間にか山積みになるケースが時々あります。 (Also, in the United States, when someone makes a reservation and puts out oversized garbage, there are times when neighbors jump in and take out the oversized garbage, and before you know it, it piles up.) しかも、なぜかマットレスとソファーが特に多いです。今後は日本のように粗大ごみ処理のシールを貼るシステムが導入されるかもしれませんね。

「あさって」「しあさって」を英語で簡単に言うと?
「あさって」は the day after tomorrow ですが、それがとっさに出てこなければ in two days (2日後) と言いかえても大丈夫。「~日後」だと ~ days after / later が思い浮かぶかもしれませんが、より伝わるのは in ~ days です。では、「しあさって」を英語で言うと? 地域によって「3日後」「4日後」と意味が異なるそうですが、「あさって」を in two days と表せるのですから、「しあさって」は in three / four days で OK ですね。
