ハリケーンにまつわる言葉(Words related to hurricanes)

日本では台風や津波についての警戒レベルの違いを 「注意報」 「警報」などで表しますね。 アメリカでハリケーンについて耳にする言葉は大きく次の3つ。
(In Japan, the different alert levels for typhoons and tsunamis are expressed as “advisory'” and “warning.” There are three main words you hear about hurricanes in America:)
1つ目は
hurricane watch 、48時間以内に上陸の可能性があるハリケーンについて知らせるものです。
2つ目は
hurricane warning 、 より警戒レベルが高い場合に使われます。
そしてもう1つ、ニュースで聞くのが
tropical stormで、これはハリケーンに近い強さの 「熱帯暴風雨」のこと。

ちなみに、 ハリケーンは日本の台風のように 「15号｣ など数字ではなく、 人名をつけて呼びます。 1989年のヒューゴ、 1992年のアンドリュー、2005年のカトリーナなどは強大なハリケーンとして有名です。
(By the way, hurricanes are called by people’s names rather than by numbers such as “No. 15,” like typhoons in Japan. Hugo in 1989, Andrew in 1992, and Katrina in 2005 are all famous for their powerful hurricanes.)

Every summer and fall, so many typhoons approach Japan. And they have gotten more and more powerful recently. When a typhoon is approaching, pay attention to the news.
毎年夏と秋には台風がたくさん日本に接近しますね。 しかも最近ではますます強力になっています。 台風が接近しているときは、ニュースに注意してくださいね。
