Let’s get started with Day 13 for the month of August.
Thanks for joining us.
Today we’re talking about tastes.
味にまつわる表現。
For example, どんな味ですか?
濃厚な味です。
Can you say that in English.
Just practice together with us. And you’ll be able to talk about the tastes of foods. Okay, let’s begin with our first time trial.
I’ll say it in Japanese, and you say it in English. Here is the first one.
1. どんな味ですか? Say it in English. Go ahead.
I’ll say the answer. How does it taste?
どんな味がしますか?
How does it taste?  OK. Before we go to the next one, let’s try to say this.
甘いです。
You could say, “It tastes sweet.”, or “It is sweet.”
OK, now try to say.
2. 甘いですが、 甘すぎません。
All right. Here is the next one.
3. このダーク・メープルシロップのほうがはるかに濃厚な味です。
Start with “This dark maple syrup -.” Go ahead.
4. でも、やはり甘いです。
Next, let’s try to say this phrase.
5. 味見する
taste
OK, now let’s make this sentence.
6. このゴールデン・メープルシロップを味見してください。
Next let’s make some phrases with 美味しい. Here is the first one.
7. 辛い料理に合わせるとおいしいです。
8. コーヒーに入れるとおいしいです。
OK. The next one is about craft beers and maple syrup.
9. クラフトビールにダーク・メープルシロップを入れる人もいます。
Start with “Some people put -.” Go ahead.
10. 自分のコーヒーに数滴たらしますね。
Start with “I’ll put -.” Go ahead.

Those phrases were about tastes, and 美味しい. Something is good.
初めて体験した味について聞きましょう。
Jenny, tell me about some tastes that you discovered in Japan.
Well, when I came to Japan, I had never tried dashi before.
For the soup, is that right?
Yes, the soups, things like nabe, those kinds of foods. I love the flavor of dashi. How about you, Steve?
Ah, I discovered so many tastes. Uni, unagi, ah, something else with “u”. Ume! What about ume, Jenny?
Ume! Ume, shiso.
Or ume potato chips even. Yes, there are so many flavors to taste and discover in Japan.
