「防災」「自然災害」を英語で言うと? (How do you say 「防災」「自然災害」in English?)

「防災」はさすが日本語ならではのコンパクトな表現の1つ。
(防災 is one of the compact expressions unique to Japanese.)
コンパクトな熟語ほど英語には直訳しにくいですね。
あえて名詞に訳すなら「natural (自然の)」を加えて natural disaster preparedness ですが、会話の中では prepare for natural disasters のように動詞のかたまりで使うのがおすすめです。
ちなみに、 preparedness の代わりに awareness (啓発) を使うこともあります。
ただ、実は「自然災害」もコンパクトな日本語で、 natural disaster がアメリカのどこででもすんなり伝わるとは限りません。
よく耳にするのは dangerous weather です。
あるいは、「自然災害」と一口に言うよりも、大雨や地震など具体的な災害の名前で表すことが多いです。
(Alternatively, rather than simply saying “natural disasters,” it is often expressed by the name of a specific disaster such as heavy rain or an earthquake.)

「用意」は prepare とは限らない
ところで、防災関連の会話では「用意する」という言葉がよく出てきますね。
(By the way, the word “prepare” often comes up in conversations related to disaster prevention.)
これは英語では必ずしも prepare とは限りません。
便利なのが have 〈物〉 ready や make です。
「非常袋を用意しないといけません」と言いたいなら、 We need to make an emergency bag.
これは防災以外にも使えて、「パスポートを用意してください」と言いたいなら、 Please have your passport ready.が自然。 prepare your passport とは言いません。
